| Minimum Qualifications | License and current registration to practice medicine in New York State and board eligible or board certified in a medical specialty and either a Master's degree in Public Health or one year of experience in a public health program. |
| Preferred Qualifications | Three years of professional work experience in public health or preventive medicine within a health department, academic or clinical setting. Familiarity with communicable disease surveillance and outbreak response activities. |
| Responsibilities | The Public Health Physician 2 will function as a Medical Epidemiologist and will provide clinical expertise and assist in the management and supervision of staff in the Regional Epidemiology Program, a critical and highly visible public health program primarily responsible for preventing and controlling communicable diseases throughout New York State. The position will manage community and health care facility outbreaks by conducting surveillance and implementing control measures to prevent and contain communicable disease outbreaks and ensuring appropriate disease testing is conducted to confirm the etiologic agent. The incumbent will provide telephone and on-site consultation to a broad range of health care professionals including local health department representatives, hospital infection control nurses, school nurses, and physicians; oversee the design and implementation of scientific studies to assess the effectiveness of the surveillance, investigative and intervention methods used; research and develop policy and clinical guidance documents on new and emerging pathogens for use by Department of Health staff, local health departments, and health care providers. |
| Conditions of Employment | Permanent, non-competitive, full-time appointment. Regular travel to areas that may not be served by public transportation is required. |
