Statement on Joint Investigation of Invasive Strep A Infections in Rochester Area

Albany, March 11 – As part of a joint investigation by the New York State and Monroe County Departments of Health of invasive Group A streptococcus infections in the Rochester area on March 10, 1997, New York State Department of Health investigators met with clinical and laboratory staff at Strong Memorial Hospital. Based on a preliminary review of the infection control practices, investigators believe that physicians and staff at Strong responded promptly and appropriately to the cases on the obstetric service. Because the last case on the Strong obstetric service occurred two weeks ago, investigators also do not believe there is an ongoing problem there.

Bacterial cultures from the cases being investigated have been sent to the Wadsworth Center in Albany for further analysis. Results from these tests and further review of hospital records should help determine how these patients acquired their infections.

As of March 11, 1997, a total of 17 cases of invasive Group A streptococcus infection have been reported to Monroe County Department of Health in 1997. The NYS Department of Health is aware of eight more cases from surrounding counties and is checking with area hospitals to find if there are any additional cases. Invasive Group A streptococcal infections only became reportable in 1995. As a result it is difficult to determine whether the 17 cases reported to date in Monroe County are more than would be expected to occur over this period.
