Water Taste Test In Central New York
Albany, August 5 – The regional taste test to determine the best drinking water in central New York will be held from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 6, at Hinerwadel's Grove, One West Taft Road in North Syracuse. This is the first of five regional contests scheduled statewide, with the top two regional winners competing for final honors on August 28, 1997, at the New York State Fair.
This unscientific, "just–for–fun" competition, sponsored by the Departments of Health and Environmental Conservation will test the water of six central New York winners of the county competition. This is the eleventh year for the statewide competition that focuses attention on the need to protect the high standards of our public drinking water supplies.
At the Central New York Taste Off, held in concert with the Central New York Waterworks Conference, water experts will participate in a blind taste test featuring liquid refreshment from the public water supplies of: City of Fulton (Oswego County), City of Auburn (Cayuga County), Town of Wells (Hamilton County), Village of Baldwinsville (Onondaga County), Village of St. Johnsville (Montgomery County), and Town of Colton (St. Lawrence County).
The top two contestants from each of the five regional events will compete at the State Fair in Syracuse on August 28 to determine the victor. The "Best Tasting Water in New York State" champ will be announced at a special presentation at the Fair and will receive a plaque and the tribute of two official highway signs proclaiming the honor.
More than 150 community water systems were represented in this year's competition statewide that started with the first round of local county contests in May, during National Drinking Water Week.
