Statement from the New York State Department of Health

Albany, August 3 – The New York State Department of Health today suspended the operating certificate of a Syracuse adult home and appointed a temporary operator for the facility.

The action against Sedgewick Heights Adult Home was taken because of significant violations resulting in imminent danger to the health, safety and welfare of the facility's residents, many of whom require nursing care or assistance with daily activities. Findings include a serious lack of management oversight resulting from the resignation of the facility's administrator and its clinical director. Other deficiencies include failure to manage residents' medications and poor sanitary conditions at the adult home. In addition, the facility's management allowed a contract for nursing services to lapse, leaving residents without essential care.

The State Health Department has appointed James Introne, president of Loretto Adult Community, as the temporary operator of Sedgewick Heights Adult Home. His appointment is effective for up to 60 days. Introne will oversee the daily operations of the facility and ensure the provision of necessary services, including nursing care.

Health Department staff will continue to assist the facility and its residents until a permanent operator is certified.
