State Awards $4.4 Million in Youth Empowerment Grants Youth organizations in 54 New York counties to benefit
ALBANY, April 17, 2001 - State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello M.D., M.P.H., Dr. Ph. today announced that more than $4.4 million in State grants will be provided to 54 county youth organizations throughout the State with a focus on Youth Empowerment and getting teens involved in the fight against tobacco use. The grants are part of Governor Pataki's $60.5 million anti-smoking campaign.
New York's anti-smoking campaign has a particular focus on youth, the grants announced today are in addition to other youth oriented components of the State's campaign including, a multi-million dollar anti-smoking advertising campaign, an interactive web site, a toll-free telephone number (1-877-446-2001) and youth-oriented supplies and gear. The awarded amounts range from $65,000 to $120,000, based on county population.
"The only thing better than quitting smoking is not starting in the first place. That's why it is so critical to involve local youth in these organizations," Dr. Novello said. "Thanks to the support of Governor Pataki, youth across the State will be able to find out first hand how addictive and harmful smoking is and why they should steer clear of it and encourage their friends and relatives to do the same."
Local youth organizations with existing county-wide programming have been funded with the grants. Each funded county will have a full-time coordinator to support the initiative. The grants charge the local organizations with building a framework to empower youth in their counties to help foster the change of social norms toward tobacco use among teens.
The Youth Empowerment request for applications will be released again only for the eight counties that were not funded through the initial grant application process and did not apply for the grant.
"By funding these county youth organizations, it will ensure that they play a pertinent role in the creation of the State's youth-oriented, anti-smoking campaign," said Dr. Novello.
Other components of Governor George E. Pataki's $60.5 million statewide anti-smoking crusade include:
- Support for school-based tobacco prevention programs;
- Creation of the largest anti-tobacco advertising program in State history;
- Promotion of smoking cessation services;
- Support of the New York State Smokers Quitline (1-888-609-6292);
- Advertising aimed at adult smoking cessation;
- Advertising to highlight the dangers of secondary smoke; and
- Coverage of prescribed and over-the-counter smoking cessation products.
