- Annual statewide telephone surveillance system designed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that monitors factors contributing to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. New York State's BRFSS sample represents the non-institutionalized adult household population, aged 18 years and older.

Comments: There are potential sources of error associated with a telephone survey. People without telephone service or who live in non-residential settings such as military bases or nursing homes are not included. Because estimates are based on results from a sample of the population that is interviewed, there may be some error in the estimate if the sample does not closely resemble the population from which it is taken.
